Pest Control Questions in Missoula
Plain answers to what people ask before they call: cost, mice, stinging insects, safety and what shows up when.
Cost and Scheduling
What does pest control cost in Missoula?
There is no single price. The cost depends on the pest, how established the problem is, the size and layout of the property, how many visits it takes and whether sealing or repair work is needed. A one-time treatment for a few ants is a different job from a rodent problem in the walls. The reliable way to get a figure is to describe your situation to the company that answers the phone.
Is a one-time treatment enough, or do I need a plan?
Some problems, such as a single wasp nest, are often handled in one visit. Others, such as mice or recurring ants, can take follow-up. Ask what the visit includes and whether a return trip is likely before you book.
How do I request service?
Call (406) 510-1969 or send the form on the contact page. Say what you are seeing, where it is, and which town you are in.
Mice and Rodents
What is the 5-day rule for mice?
It is a rule of thumb used in the trade. If traps keep catching mice for five or more days in a row, the infestation is usually larger than a few traps can handle. Five days with no activity at all is used as a sign that control is working. It is a guide only, and it can be wrong either way.
How do mice get into a house?
Through small gaps. Around pipes, vents, garage doors, foundations and utility lines are common spots, and a mouse can squeeze through a very small opening. That is why sealing matters as much as removal. See rodent control.
Is it safe to clean up droppings myself?
Do not sweep or vacuum them, because that puts dust into the air, and deer mice can carry hantavirus. Wet the droppings with disinfectant, wear gloves and wipe them up. If you find a lot in a closed space such as a cabin or crawl space, mention it when you call.
Wasps, Hornets and Yellowjackets
Can I knock down a wasp nest myself?
It is risky. Wasps defend a nest aggressively, and some nests are hidden in wall voids or the ground where you cannot see how large they are. Keep your distance and call. See wasp, hornet and yellowjacket removal.
Why are yellowjackets worse in late summer?
Colonies keep growing through the warm months, so there are many more insects by late summer and early fall. They also become more interested in food and sweet drinks at that time of year.
Safety and Preparation
Is pest control safe for pets and children?
It depends on the treatment, so ask the technician. In general, keep pets and children out of treated areas until the technician says they are dry and safe to use.
Do I need to leave the house?
Not always. It depends on the pest and the treatment. Ask when you book so you can plan.
How should I prepare?
Clear access to the area, move food and dishes out of the way, and note where you saw the pest. Leave nests and droppings in place so the technician can see them.
Seasons and Pests
When are ants a problem in Missoula?
Mostly from spring through summer, once the weather warms. Carpenter ants can stay active indoors where wood remains damp. See ant control.
Are bed bugs a sign of a dirty home?
No. They travel on luggage, clothing and used furniture, and they turn up in clean homes, rentals and hotels alike. See bed bug treatment.
Does Montana have termites?
Subterranean termites are uncommon in Montana. Wood damage here more often comes from carpenter ants or from moisture. An inspection still makes sense if you suspect damage or are buying a house. See termite and wood pest control.
